The centre of Spain, Madrid is known as the cultural capital, home to many of the finest paintings and artistic neighbourhoods in the world. You can find all major attractions that complement many European cities, including world-class museums and a royal palace. Choosing Madrid as a vacation destination is a top choice and you should be ready to switch between the modern and traditional to appreciate the city’s charm, creativity, and historic legacy.

For this list of the best things to do in Madrid, I have curated places highly recommended by tourism experts and from my experience in Madrid during my latest travels. If you’ll be visiting Madrid for just a day, a few days, or a week, there's an option you'd love.

1.Museo nacional del prado

2. The rose garden of Retiro Park

A breath of fresh air to ease into the new environment is much needed and the massive garden at Retiro Park offers that vibe. You get to simply take a stroll through the garden or rent a boat and take a short trip to the Great Pond. Fun fact; The Great Pond is an artificial lake created in the 17th century when the Spanish monarchy started mock naval battles.

3. Visit the royal palace of Madrid

The royal palace of Madrid is one of the largest palaces in the world with over 3000 rooms and is revered for its enthralling Spanish crown treasures. None of the Spanish royal family members currently reside in the palace but remains an official head of state residence and it is one of the few royal palaces that are open to the public.

4. Matadero Madrid

The Matadero Madrid theatre complex was once a slaughterhouse built in the early 20th century. The Matadero compound theatre complex is a hub for all types of performing and visual arts ranging from philosophy, literature, and music to other forms of transmedia. It is considered a centre and a lively place for the enjoyment of culture, artistic exploration and experimentation. There are guided tours if you revisit the Matadero Madrid and you get to view the most emblematic projects of the city.

5. Almudena Cathedral

The most famous cathedral in all of Madrid is located just beside the royal palace. The Almudena cathedral was built in the 19th century and has neolithic interiors which is a stunning sight worthy of appreciation.

6. Museo Reina Sofia (Queen Sofia Arts Centre)

Are you an art lover? Or just a tad interested? I'm sure you’ve heard of Picasso once in your lifetime and at Museo Reina Sofia, you get to see the artworks of the famous Picasso. His most famous painting which depicts the horrors of the Spanish Civil War is on permanent display at the center. You can also view his other paintings and other collections of other famous artists.

7. Palacio de Cibeles

Palacio de Cibelis was formerly Madrid's main post office and telegraph/telephone headquarters. The monumental building is now the seat of the Madrid city council since 2007 and the public cultural centre. It is considered a worthy visit for it's the most beautiful and liveliest square in Madrid. Palacio de Cibeles is home to some impressive monuments such as the Cibelis fountain which is a symbol of Madrid's stand in the middle of the square.

8. Palacio de cristal

Also known as the Glass Palace, it is located within the Retiro Park and is a must-see tourist attraction. Palacio de Cristal is a remarkable masterpiece that was originally designed as a greenhouse. Currently, it is an off-site exhibition centre for Museo Reina Sofia. Just like the Museo Reina Sofia, many treasures are on display and the building is something to admire.

9. Explore the local markets

Your trip would be incomplete without a visit to the local markets. Madrid offers a variety of high and low dining options and if you're into something casual and on a budget, you should visit local markets like Mercado de la Paz. You get to try local meals, high-quality meat, and fantastic Spanish omelettes. Exploring the local markets is a great way to get an authentic experience of the city.

10. Plaza mayor

Plaza Mayor is the biggest plaza in Madrid and is known to be a famous tourist attraction. The ambience of the plaza is filled with Neo-classical architecture and is abuzz with various activities. Hang around the plaza to watch street performers or eat at one of the fine dining restaurants.

11. Temple of Debod

Now standing in Madrid's Parque de la Montana is the temple of Debod, an ancient Egyptian temple. The temple of Debod surrounded by a stunning clear pool, was a gift from Egypt to Spain. It was dismantled and rebuilt to house a small museum on ancient Egypt history. This place is common among couples as a romantic spot to enjoy the sunset and appreciate the panoramic views of the city.
